Liposuction in New York – Dr. Richard Swift

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was the most popular cosmetic surgery of 2011, with over 325,000 procedures performed. It was the second most popular among women (breast augmentation being the most popular) and the most popular among men. Dr. Richard Swift is a respected liposuction surgeon who has an artist’s eye. He can enhance the natural curves and contours of the body via liposuction surgery.

What Does Liposuction Accomplish?

Liposuction is used to remove pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It can be used on the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees and upper arms, as well as more delicate areas such as the chin, cheeks and neck.

Liposuction Candidates

Candidates should be in good health and free of any compromising medical issues. Dr. Swift will consult with each liposuction candidate to determine whether the surgery is appropriate for their needs, and also to ensure that the candidate has realistic expectations of what the surgery will accomplish. It should be noted that liposuction is not suitable for anyone who is significantly overweight. Candidates should be, at most, between 10 and 15 pounds from their ideal weight.

Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure performed with local or general anesthesia. It usually takes between one and five hours, depending on the amount of fat you need removed. The procedure varies slightly depending on the approach that Dr. Swift decides to take in your case.

During traditional liposuction, known as suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL), Dr. Swift makes a small, inconspicuous incision in the treatment area and inserts a cannula (a small tube). Moving it back and forth beneath the skin, he breaks up the fat layer. Then, the fat is removed with suction.

During ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy (UAL), he makes an incision in the treatment area. He directs ultrasonic energy at the fat cells, liquefying them and making them easier to extract. Then he uses a cannula to remove the liquefied fat.

Recovering from Liposuction

As you recover from liposuction, you’ll likely feel swollen and bruised for a few weeks. Dr. Swift will provide you with compression garments and antibiotics if needed. You may return to work within a few days, but should avoid any strenuous exercise or activity for about a month.
