Breast Augmentation Surgery in New York – Dr. Richard Swift

Breast augmentation is consistently one of the top plastic surgery procedures for women. If you feel self-conscious about small breasts, and want a bigger bust, consider breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation is performed using implants, which are safe medical devices placed in the breast tissue to enhance the bust. Dr. Richard Swift has been treating Manhattan breast augmentation patients for many years and is known for creating beautiful and natural looking results.

What Breast Augmentation Can Accomplish

Breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts. Dr. Swift recommends breast augmentation to balance breast size, compensate for reduced breast mass after surgery or pregnancy or to correct a congenital breast defect. Breast augmentation will not improve the position of the breasts, however, so sometimes it is combined with breast lift surgery.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

Ideal breast augmentation candidates are women in good health who do not smoke or have uncontrolled medical issues. If you don’t like the way your breasts fill out bikinis or tank tops, or your breasts have shrunk as you’ve gotten older or nursed children, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation.

Dr. Swift will meet with you one-on-one to review your candidacy and inquire about your motivations for the surgery. His objective is to ensure that you want the surgery for personal reasons, and not because of someone else’s request.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. It is highly customized to you and your needs, and is based on a treatment plan that you and Dr. Swift will develop prior to surgery. The treatment plan will include the:

  • type of implants: either saline or silicone (both approved by the FDA for breast augmentation surgery)
  • location of the surgical incision: either along the crease underneath the breast, around the lower edge of the areola, or within the armpit
  • placement of the implants: over the chest muscle or behind it

Dr. Swift will make the surgical incisions in the pre-determined location and gently create a pocket within the breast tissue. Then, he will place the implant inside. Saline implants may be filled at the time of surgery, while silicone implants are pre-filled. Once the implants have been properly positioned, he will close the incisions and bandage the breasts.

Recovering from Breast Augmentation

You will probably feel tired and sore for a day or two following breast augmentation surgery, but you should be able to return to work within a week. Dr. Swift will want you to wear a surgical bra once he has removed your bandages. You should refrain from bending, lifting anything heavy or engaging in strenuous exercise until he has cleared you.

Breast Augmentation Risks

Breast augmentation complications are rare, but include:

  • Capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant)
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Change in nipple sensation
  • Implant rupture or leakage

If your saline implants rupture, you’ll be able to tell immediately as they will deflate very quickly and your body will absorb the saltwater. If your silicone implants leak, you’ll need to see a physician immediately. We encourage our patients with silicone implants to have regular MRIs to detect any problems.
